How Much Does The SpaceX Starship Cost?

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, recently stated about the anticipated cost of the SpaceX Starship. According to Musk, the Starship is expected to cost “less than $10 million all in,” which is considerably cheaper than the current industry standard. Furthermore, Musk predicts that the cost of a Starship flight will eventually decrease to “maybe even as low as a million dollars per flight” as space travel on the Starship becomes more frequent. To put this into context, a flight on SpaceX’s current Falcon 9 costs around $62 million to launch. Private NASA flights to the International Space Station cost $55 million each.

Can SpaceX’s Starship be used to replace a space station?

Certainly! It’s exciting to think about the possibilities of Starship replacing a space station. SpaceX has big plans for this vehicle, envisioning it as a fully reusable transportation system that can transport crew and cargo to various locations across our solar system, including the Moon and Mars. One of the reasons Starship has the potential to be a space station replacement is because of its ability to remain in space for extended periods. With a pressurized cabin that can hold up to 100 people, it’s possible to use Starship as a habitat for long-duration missions.

However, it’s important to remember that Starship is still in the development stage, and there are numerous technical and operational hurdles to clear before it can be used for such a purpose. Additionally, the cost of launching and maintaining a Starship-based space station is a significant consideration that may make it more practical to continue using traditional space station designs. Imagine embarking on a nine-month journey to Mars and back, with a cozy cabin as your home away from home.

Elon Musk plans to make this a reality by installing around 40 cabins in the payload area near the front of the upper stage. The payload bay will also feature common areas, storage space, a galley, and a shelter to protect against solar storms. These storms can be dangerous, as the Sun emits harmful charged particles into space. With Starship, travelers can gather in a haven and await the storm. But Starship’s mission extends beyond just traveling to Mars. It will also play a crucial role in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon. NASA recently awarded SpaceX a $2.89 billion contract to develop Starship into a lander capable of delivering astronauts to the lunar surface this decade.

With Starship, the possibilities for space exploration are genuinely endless. The version designed for Artemis flights won’t have the heat shield or flaps necessary for a return journey back to Earth. Instead, the Starship Human Landing System will stay in space after its initial launch from Earth, making it suitable for multiple trips between the lunar orbit and the Moon’s surface.

But that’s not all! The uncrewed, or cargo, version of Starship boasts a payload bay that opens up like the mouth of a crocodile, allowing it to launch satellites. The massive payload capacity opens up new opportunities for exciting robotic science missions, such as telescopes larger than the James Webb Observatory – the successor to Hubble, launched in December 2021. Imagine the possibilities! Elon Musk’s Starship is not just for space exploration; it’s also a potential game-changer for tourism. Musk promised a trip around the Moon in 2023 to the Japanese online retail billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. And the possibilities don’t stop there. Starship could also revolutionize travel on Earth, providing high-speed journeys between destinations. But Musk’s dream is to eventually use Starship to carry people to destinations in the “greater Solar System,” including gas giants like Jupiter. It’s an ambitious goal that Musk is determined to achieve in the long term.

How Does The Upper Stage Of Starship Land?

There are a few tried and true methods when bringing spacecraft safely back to Earth. You could use a trusty parachute or design the vehicle to land gracefully on a runway. But the Starship upper stage? Well, it’s a maverick. Rather than relying on traditional techniques, this craft takes a unique approach. As it re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it tilts at a daring 60-degree angle and then “belly-flops” horizontally to the ground. It’s a risky maneuver that requires a lot of trust in the vehicle’s design and the natural forces around it. But if all goes well, it’s an impressive and efficient way to touch down on our home planet.

When Starship is about to land, it must take it slow and perform an engine burn to flip the vehicle vertically. Then, the Raptors come into play, acting as retro rockets to guide the vehicle safely onto its landing legs. Elon Musk believes this method can land Starship on any planet in our solar system. But, in the future, Starships returning to Earth and other destinations may not need to do the flip maneuver. Instead, they could be caught by the launch tower’s steel arms, just like the Super Heavy booster. Exciting times are ahead! Musk explained on Twitter: “Ship will be caught by Mechazilla too. As with booster, no landing legs. Those are only needed for Moon and Mars until there is local infrastructure.”

When will it fly?

Exciting news from SpaceX! The company has just announced that it’ll be launching its very first commercial space station. Best of all, you can even reserve your seat now. In an exciting move, SpaceX plans to launch what is being touted as the world’s first commercial space station. The Vast Haven-1 is set to take off as early as August 2025 on a Falcon 9 rocket, heading for low-Earth orbit. As an independent crewed space station, it’s the first step towards a grander vision of a multi-module base that will eventually be connected to a giant space station.
