                                                                    (Keats)

 Sports and games are essential for health. They keep us healthy and fit. They offer us a change from the monotony of daily life. They give us energy and strength. They shape our body and make it strong and active. They remove tiredness and lethargy. This improves our physical well-being. The games can be divided into groups; the outdoor games and the indoor games. The outdoor games include football, cricket, hockey, etc. These games require a lot of running. The stamina of a person automatically increases. The indoor games include ludo, Carrum, etc. They also keep us busy and mentally agile. They give exercise to our mind and memory. It is a common saying, “A sound body has a sound mind.” A strong body is capable of fulfilling religious and worldly duties.

            “Sports is the greatest physical poetry.”
                                                                                         Joe Philips

Doctors advise their patients to exercise regularly and play any sports. They recommend it because physical activity has a positive effect on our bodies. Sports and games activate the lazy cells and organs of our body. It increases the flow of blood throughout the body, making the heart stronger. Allah expects Muslims to take care of their bodies to the best of their abilities. A strong body is more capable to perform the obligations of life and religion. In the Hadith we read:

                          “A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak one.”
                                          [Reported by Muslim]

It was reported that Prophet Muhammad [P.B.U.H] raced with  Hazrat Ayesha, his beloved wife and she outran him. It was also stated that He [P. B. U. H] participated in horse races and encouraged Sahabas who were practising horse riding, swimming, shooting and running.
According to Hazrat Ali, the fourth caliph  of Islam;

                              “A healthy mind can realise God.”
Moreover, sports can boost academics. Playing games increase concentration power. Students who play sports do not waste their precious time in gossiping and fault-finding. Our educational institution should encourage sports and games by organising matches and inter-school competitions awarding prizes and trophies. We need to motivate our students to take an active part in sports because we know that, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.

             Moreover, a player becomes a man of principle. He respects the rules of the games he plays. He leads a disciplined life. He possesses the virtues of patriotism, and loyalty to the nation. Sports and games teach us time management as well.

Sports and games have long been a part of warfare and gymnastic training. Greeks used many types of sports and games to make their body strong. They started the Olympic games to promote the culture of competing in a healthy and dignified way.

A good player plays the game in a team spirit. He does not play sports for his honour but he plays for his team and for his nation.
We all need to get some time for sports from our busy schedule because it is important for our physical and mental health.

                                    “Sports don’t build character they reveal it”
                                      Heywood Broun
